As an accredited hiking guide and photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working in some of the most spectacular backcountry locations in Canada. From mountaintop weddings to intimate helicopter proposals, capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments in the great outdoors is truly an unforgettable experience. But with these unique and awe-inspiring settings comes the need for careful preparation.

Whether you're booking a helicopter wedding, proposal, or photo shoot, being prepared for the backcountry is essential to ensure your day is as smooth, safe, and enjoyable as possible. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through some key things to consider when planning your adventure and share some tips on what to pack and the safety precautions you should take.

1. Be Ready for Changing Weather Conditions

In the mountains, the weather can change quickly. One minute it’s sunny, and the next, a storm can roll in. When booking a heli session, make sure you’re ready for a variety of conditions. This means layering your clothing, including a lightweight but insulated jacket, a rain layer, and sturdy footwear, even if you’re planning on getting photos in a stunning dress or suit.

What to pack:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Layered clothing for warmth, a waterproof outer layer, and sturdy, comfortable shoes.

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: Even on cloudy days, the high-altitude sun can be harsh.

  • Hat and gloves: Even in summer, temperatures can drop when you reach higher altitudes.

2. Know the Terrain and Be Prepared for Physical Activity

Mountain landings are often on rocky or uneven terrain, and even if you’re landing in a meadow or near a lake, there could be uneven ground or tricky spots. It's important to be aware of your physical capabilities and dress accordingly. If you're not accustomed to the backcountry, you may need to walk a little bit to get to the perfect photo spot.

What to pack:

  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots: Make sure your footwear is sturdy and supportive for any uneven ground you might encounter.

  • Water: You may need to hike a little or walk from the helicopter to your photo shoot spot, so staying hydrated is crucial.

  • Snacks: A small snack can come in handy if you're spending time in the wilderness.

3. Understand the Logistics of Helicopter Access

Helicopter flights are incredible, but they also require careful planning. When booking a helicopter session, make sure you’re aware of the specific landing zones and how long the helicopter can remain in a given spot. These areas are often remote and only accessible by air, so it's important to consider how much time you’ll spend there and what you’ll need for comfort during your shoot.

Safety Considerations:

  • Safety briefing: Always listen carefully to the pilot’s safety instructions before takeoff. You will receive a briefing on the helicopter's operation, how to safely board, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

  • Weight limits: Helicopters have strict weight restrictions, so be sure to clarify the number of people, including yourself, your photographer, and any equipment.

4. Prioritize Your Safety: Know the Risks of Backcountry Photography

While the backcountry provides stunning scenery, it also comes with inherent risks. As a photographer and hiking guide, safety is always my top priority, and I encourage my clients to consider potential risks, such as altitude sickness, wildlife encounters, and unpredictable weather.

What to pack for safety:

  • Personal medication: If you have any medical conditions or require medication, ensure you bring it with you on the day of the shoot.

  • First-aid kit: While I always carry one as your photographer/guide, it’s always a good idea to have your own small, portable kit with basics such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.

  • Cell phone or emergency beacon: While we’ll be in remote areas, I ensure that there is reliable communication or emergency equipment on hand in case anything goes awry.

5. Be Mindful of the Environment and Leave No Trace

When you’re in the backcountry, it’s important to respect the natural surroundings. The areas where we’ll be landing and shooting are pristine, and it’s essential to leave them as we found them. This includes following Leave No Trace principles, ensuring we don’t disturb wildlife, and being mindful of the fragile ecosystems in the mountains.

What to pack for environmental care:

  • Reusable water bottles and containers: Avoid single-use plastics and keep the environment clean.

  • Trash bags: Bring a small bag to pack out any waste or litter you may have, even if it’s just food wrappers or empty water bottles.

6. Work with a Photographer Who Knows the Area

When booking your helicopter shoot, make sure you’re working with a photographer who has experience in the backcountry. As someone who’s been providing photography services to Alpine Helicopters for over 10 years, I’m intimately familiar with the best locations, weather conditions, and potential challenges of each site. I know the landing areas well and can advise you on what to expect and how to make the most of your time in the mountains.

Final Thoughts: Plan Ahead and Enjoy the Adventure

A heli wedding, proposal, or photo shoot in the mountains is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. By being prepared and understanding the challenges of backcountry photography, you can ensure that your day is not only stunning but also safe and enjoyable. Whether it’s packing the right gear, preparing for variable weather, or working with an experienced guide and photographer, the more you plan ahead, the more you can relax and soak in the beauty of the mountains during your shoot.
